Goal is to Promote Better Informed Design Decision Making
Regarding Cool and Reflective Roofing
Alexandria-Va. (November 18)- Nine major construction industry groups announced
today the formation of the SolarSmart Roof Alliance (SSRA). SSRA's mission is
to educate policy makers and the construction marketplace about the environmental
performance and economic issues presented when considering the use of reflective
roofing.
In light of the increasing attention that policy makers, building scientists
and the construction marketplace are giving to the issue of reflectivity, it is
clear that the roofing industry needed one central organization to assist in providing
credible and technically supported data on the role reflectivity may play in energy-efficient
construction," said Bill Good, Executive Vice President of the National Roofing
Contractors Association (NRCA), and a founding member of SSRA. "We believe
that if suitably informed, the marketplace will make better informed decisions
regarding the use of reflective roof material."
The new industry group was officially formed in October with the creation
of a steering committee and board of directors with individuals representing the
following organizations: the Alliance for Polyurethanes Industry (API), the Asphalt
Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), the EPDM Roofing Association (ERA),
the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA), the Roof Coatings
Manufacturers Association (RCMA), the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA),
the sheet membrane and component suppliers to the commercial roofing industry
(SPRI, Inc.), the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA),
and the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA).
"Reflectivity, appropriately utilized as part of a total roof system,
can play a balanced role in our nation's efforts at energy security. It is apparent
that both government and the construction marketplace are seeking additional information
as to the role that a properly designed roof can play in creating energy-efficient
building performance, while also dealing with important environmental issues such
as the urban heat island effect," stated Russ Snyder, Executive Vice President
of the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, one of SSRA's founding member
organizations.
The immediate goal of SSRA is to assess the present status
of research on critical performance issues that is available for the construction
industry with respect to reflectivity, and to work with other concerned groups
in educating the marketplace on this important issue.
